Our Founder at TEDx
On December 10, 2024, our director, Esther Bonney, delivered a powerful talk at TEDxHagerstownWomen, sharing her vision for youth-led environmental action. As the founder of one of the world's largest youth-led nonprofits focused on native biodiversity, Esther spoke under the theme “Ideas Big Enough to Change the World,” highlighting the role of native plants in addressing the climate crisis and supporting mental health. Her message emphasized the transformative potential of reconnecting people, especially youth, with the natural world.
Ideas Changing the World
In her talk, Esther introduces a powerful idea: bridging youth mental health and climate action through horticulture. She emphasizes the importance of integrating horticultural exposure into educational and wellness programs as a way to empower young people to face the dual challenges of the mental health and climate crises. Esther frames the act of reconnecting with nature not as a trend, but as a return to something essential and deeply human. “In nurturing the land, we nurture ourselves,” she explains, advocating for youth-centered initiatives that cultivate both personal growth and environmental responsibility—laying the groundwork for a revolutionary wave of youth-led environmental action.
TEDx events are independently organized under the TED mission of sharing “ideas worth spreading,” bringing together voices from around the world to spark meaningful dialogue and action. TEDxHagerstownWomen carries this mission forward by amplifying the leadership of women and local changemakers in Western Maryland and beyond.
